How to Have a Heart – Illustrator Tutorial

Now select all the major shapes you made and fill them with white. You’ll probably have to do some restructuring now to make sure that all your shapes are in the right order. Remember:
ctrl+] (command+]) = bring layer forward
ctrl+[ (command+[) = bring layer back
ctrl+shift+] (command+shift+]) = bring layer to front
ctrl+shift+[ (command+shift+[) = bring layer to back

Now select the super thick lines that you made way back in the beginning. Go to Object>Expand, make sure at least stroke is selected, and click ok. Those lines should now be shapes. Leave them selected and move on to the next step.

With the shapes from the last step still selected, click the Unite button in your pathfinder panel. This will combine all the shapes you have selected into one object.

Now that we have all our basic shapes in there, it’s time for some cleanup. You want to give your new combined vein shape a stroke and possibly some detail to show a little bit of depth. Now’s also a good time to play around with stroke thicknesses and styles. There are some really helpful way selection methods in the Selection menu. Most notably, Select>Same>Fill Color and Select>Same>Stroke Weight are great for selecting similar groups for playing around with styles.

Now just color the whole thing in, and add your own flair. As always, we’d love to see some of your work and appreciate any comments you may have. Happy hearting.

You should do these designs for Anatomy and Medical textbooks… Of course they would all have to be anatomically correct!
I’m sorry, but I’m just starting out with Illustrator (went to art school for three years, they never showed us how to use a vector-based program, just Photoshop – and never the pen tool), and this is just too vague for me to figure out. Thanks anyway.
